Investment returns see non-profit funds rise to the top
Recent media reports highlight the potential benefits of investing for retirement with a profit-to-member fund like Prime Super1.
Chant West revealed that in 2023, “all of the top 10 performers were profit-to-member industry funds with no for-profit funds on the list2”.
Included in the list is Prime Super’s MySuper option which generated investment returns of 10.30%—welcome news for all our members investing for their retirement via the MySuper investment option3.
Additionally, the research Do superannuation fund members benefit from large fund size? by Geoff Warren at Australian National University has found, smaller funds like Prime Super are not overshadowed by mega funds when it comes to generating benefits for members4.
If the 2023 calendar year is anything to go by, it’s further evidence that the scale of a fund does not determine its capacity to deliver strong investment returns.
Small funds have also generally outshone large funds when it comes to the capacity to build more personal relationships with members and deliver high levels of responsiveness to member enquiries.
And, during a year of ongoing global instability and investment market volatility, smaller funds like Prime Super have been able to deliver to members the benefits that come with being small enough to be adaptable and seize investment opportunities as they present.
The performance of some of the smaller funds in 2023 may surprise some in the industry, and serves as a valuable reminder that success in financial markets is not determined by fund size. The ability to adapt, innovate, and seize the right opportunities at the right time can drive superior returns for members.
At Prime Super we’re delighted to be included in the list of top ten performers for 20235—it is great news for our members, the people we’re working hard for every day right around Australia.
